Viper releases SmartStart for Android devices  by Damon Lavrinc (RSS feed) on Jul 30th, 2010 at 10:59AM
Up until now, anyone with an iPhone or Blackberry and a vehicle with a Viper alarm system could control a range of features from their SmartStart-equipped smartphone. Now Viper is extending that functionality to Google-powered devices through its free app in the Android Marketplace.

Vehicles equipped with the SmartStart hardware can start their engines remotely, pre-warm or pre-cool the insides and, depending on the implementation, lock and unlock doors, pop the trunk and arm their vehicle through their phones. If a baddy cracks the window, an alert is sent to the smartphone and if you've got more than one vehicle equipped with the hardware/software combo, you can keep tabs on all your rides through the system.

Full details in the cheese-laden video and accompanying press release after the jump.

Cappucino Rampante: Nespresso makes a machine for Ferrari (sorta)
by Noah Joseph (RSS feed) on Aug 6th, 2010 at 7:57AM

We're gonna let you in on a little secret from our world over here. Most of the time we spend at auto shows, we're pretty busy bringing you the latest from the show floor. But everyone deserves a coffee brake, and when we need our caffeine fixes there's no shortage of automakers eager to one-up each other with the best cup of java. Ferrari's espressos consistently rank among the best of 'em. Only fitting then that the company of the Prancing Horse should have its own espresso machine, right?

Following in the footsteps of Lamborghini's and Brunopasso's (metaphorically) octane-infused machines comes this one from Nespresso, designed for that winningest of merchandizing brands. It comes, as you can see, packaged inside a racing helmet, the visor lifting to expose the spout, the chin pulling out like a drawer and various panels exposing the other compartments. Just the thing for when you need a dose of Vivalto Lungo to go with your Forza Ferrari. Unfortunately it's only a concept for the time being, but if anyone can pull it off, it's the boys from Maranello.

BMW introducing iPad docks for back seats, iPhone 4 integration  by Zach Bowman (RSS feed) on Sep 20th, 2010 at 11:28AM
BMW ConnectedDrive   BMW ConnectedDrive – Click above for high-res image gallery
Good news, Apple fans. BMW has turned up the level of smart phone integration in its vehicles in a big way. The company will be showing off its new ConnectedDrive system at the 2010 Paris Motor Show. The swank tech not only boasts Bluetooth wizardry and a text-to-speech function that will allow drivers to access text messages, memos, emails and the like from their Blackberry, it will also work with Apple iOS4. That means that the system clicks with the latest iPhone.

But wait, there's more.

The German manufacturer is also introducing something it calls iPod Out that's designed to make the most of using Apple music players in the vehicle. There's even a handy docking system for the iPad in the back seats. What's more, BMW will offer a mobile hotspot system with ConnectedDrive so that passengers can surf the web without burning up their data plans. Welcome to the brave new world. Thanks for the tip, Chris!

Hot Wheels introduces remote controlled Stealth Rides  by Jonathon Ramsey (RSS feed) on Sep 21st, 2010 at 8:02AM

Hot Wheels has just rolled out two new R/C cars in the Stealth Rides line. The collapsible racers fit into their own cases which double as infrared remote controls. At the moment there are just two vehicles – one with wheels and another with treads – but in October Batman's Tumbler joins the party. The good news is they fit in any pocket, run for about 45 minutes and cost just $25. The not so good news is that when that 45 minutes is up you'll have to replace five watch batteries – three in the car, two in the remote – to get them going again. Click the link for the video at CNET. Hat tip to Sea Urchin

GTO London offers everything but the Prancing Horse  by Noah Joseph (RSS feed) on Oct 31st, 2010 at 5:33PM
Cufflinks by GTO London  Cufflinks by GTO London – Click above for high-res image

Ferrari is as much a lifestyle entity as an auto manufacturer, putting its name on everything from wristwatches to theme parks. Still, not everything imbued with the Cavallino spirit comes out of Maranello's marketing department. Case in point: the lineup from GTO London. An offshoot of vintage Ferrari specialists GTO Engineering, GTO London offers a range of Ferrari-inspired, if not necessarily licensed, paraphernalia.

The collection includes such items as cufflinks, keychains, tie pins and wallets, all styled along the lines of classic Ferraris and inspired by the marque's most legendary automobiles. Design flourishes range from steering wheels and shift gates to carb trumpets and connecting rods, realized in leather, silver, gold and "real Ferrari metal" reclaimed from the workshop's restoration projects. They may not be for everyone, but for the gentleman motorist with a soft sport for Maranello's finest, they're sure to make a welcome gift this coming holiday season.

Priory Fine Arts flies the Spirit of Ecstasy with reproduction sculptures  by Noah Joseph (RSS feed) on Nov 21st, 2010 at 5:31PM
Spirit of Ecstasy   Spirit of Ecstasy sculpture by Priory Fine Arts – Click above for high-res image gallery
Though hood ornaments were once commonplace on high-end automobiles, they've all but completely gone the way of the dodo. Mercedes-Benz sedans still use the simple but iconic three-pointed star, and its upscale sister brand Maybach has its own Double-M. Some Bentley owners opt for the Flying B ornament, but the Jaguar leaping cat is even less common. Few carry the mantle as proudly as Rolls-Royce though.

The Spirit of Ecstasy has been the Rolls-Royce mascot for decades, and remains so today. Back in its heyday, though, Rolls dealers often displayed oversized sculptures – a couple of feet tall or more – of the Spirit in their showrooms. Afficionados, however, can still get these to display in their homes or offices thanks to an English studio called Priory Fine Arts.

Priory crafts replicas of the classic statuettes out of brass, optionally plated in silver or gold. You can get your hands on one for $3,150. The price is listed as negotiable, but the precious-metal leaf will undoubtedly add a few extra greenbacks. Have a closer look at the continuation sculptures – soon to celebrate the centenary of the 1911 original – in the gallery below, or follow the links to inquire about ordering your own.

Limited-edition Nike Dunk 6.0 'DeLorean' shoes run to the top of our holiday wish-list  by Steven J. Ewing (RSS feed) on Nov 22nd, 2010 at 1:58PM
 Nike Dunk 6.0 DeLorean shoes

We internet types don't always condone the idea of waking up at the crack of dawn on Black Friday for some mad-dash holiday shopping, but if there was ever a product we'd wait in line for, this might just be it. Starting this Friday, November 26, Nike will be selling its brand-new Dunk 6.0 DeLorean shoe, modeled after what is perhaps the most iconic movie car of all time, the DMC-12 from Back to the Future.

Our favorite stainless-steel sports car has been reinterpreted in the form of this seriously sweet pair of kicks, featuring a matte silver, no-sew constructed upper body. The shoe's sole mimics the DMC-12's 80's-tastic taillights, and there's even a Belfast stamp on the tongue, giving a hat tip to the Irish factory where John Z's machines were originally produced. It even comes in a gullwing-inspired box.

No official details have been released as to how many pairs of these special shoes will be produced or what they will cost, though a few online sources have cited that 1,000 pairs will be available worldwide. Knowing our luck, these hot kicks will surely sell out faster than you can shout, "Eighty-eight miles an hour!"

Video: Race-Star ConverTTable may be the coolest coffee table we've ever seen  by Jeff Glucker (RSS feed) on Dec 3rd 2010 at 2:58PM
Race-Star Converttable   Race-Star ConverTTable is our kind of furniture – Click above to watch video after the jump
A driving wheel sounds like a nice addition for any racing video game, but in reality it might not work as well as you hope. You have to find a place to mount the wheel and a make sure your pedals aren't sliding around the floor. It's not that much of a hassle, but a dedicated space for both wheel and pedals would be nice... throw in a racing seat and the virtual-racing ante has officially been upped.

But where would you store something like that and how do you craft it so as not to be a total eye-sore? Austrian company Race-Star has the answer and it comes in the form of the ConverTTable.

What appears to be a fairly basic box table actually hides a special gaming secret. The ConverTTable unfolds to reveal a driving wheel, adjustable pedals and a track mounted racing bucket. You can slide it in front of your TV and the Nürburgring on Gran Turismo 5 goes from a controller-hucking experience to a carousel-shredding event. When it's time to shut down the fun, simply fold the table back up and it turns right back into drink-holding furniture.

The price for a Race-Star ConverTTable setup is listed at €4,999, which translates to about $6,605 USD. That is a lot of coin for something you might be able to engineer in your garage. Can you produce the same level of fit-and-finish as Race-Star has achieved? Probably not, unless you are used to working with high-quality plastics. Regardless of the price, the Race-Star ConverTTable has earned its place on our Autoblog Holiday Wish List.

Hop the jump to see it in action.

Nicholas Brawer decanters replicate classic radiator grilles  by Noah Joseph (RSS feed) on Dec 11th, 2010 at 8:01PM

Let us go on the record once again as stating that we at Autoblog don't condone drinking and driving. But to suggest that those who love cars can't also enjoy the occasional adult beverage is another matter entirely. For such a crowd, craftsman Nicholas Brawer has just the thing.

Joining a collection that includes a replica mahogany wind tunnel model of an aerial bomb and a portable roulette wheel comes this unique set of collectables – a selection of ornamental decanters styled after the radiator grilles of classic Rolls-Royce, Bentley, Bugatti, Mercedes-Benz and Jaguar automobiles. All five come in the set, each crafted to scale from chrome and glass. They assuredly don't come cheap, but they may just do the trick for the discerning enthusiast on your shopping list.
